The Harpoon is a “volume‑shifted, directional volume board” from Never Summer, meant to give a surfy freeride / all‑mountain experience.
Key features / characteristics:
Profile: Fusion Rocker Camber — meaning there’s rocker between / under the feet with camber sections outside of that. Helps with float (pow), surf‑style turns, and some forgiveness.
Flex / Dampness: Medium flex (rated ~5/10) and medium dampness. Not super stiff (good for freeride but less demanding), with vibration absorbing tech (RDS‑2 damping, under‑foot elastomeric stabilizers) to smooth out chop and rough terrain.
Shape and Taper: Directional shape with about 13mm taper (nose wider / longer vs tail) and a setback stance (~2.3 in / ~58mm). This helps in powder float, helps the nose lift, turns more smoothly off‑axis.
Width / Volume‑Shifted: It’s built with some extra width and volume, so you can ride a shorter board (3‑5 cm shorter than your regular size) if you want better agility (esp. in trees/pow). The width helps for float and stability.
Sidecut: Uses “Power Grip Sidecut / Vario Power Grip Sidecut” — multiple radii so that edge hold is better especially when the board is flexed / on edge. Helps with carving and holding an edge in harder snow / mixed conditions.
Core / Build Materials:
SuperLight wood core.
Laminates: Carbon Max (for snap/pop and response), Bi‑Lite fiberglass, STS pre‑tensioned fiberglass.
Sidewalls: Sintered UHMW or sintered P‑tex / UHMW sidewall for durability. Full wrap metal edge.
Base: Durasurf XT sintered 5501 base. Strong, fast.
What it’s Good At
What the Harpoon tends to shine at:
Strength Details
Powder & Soft Snow The taper, setback stance, and volume width help the board float well in pow, slash through fresh snow, and handle uneven soft surfaces with grace. Riders often mention its “surfy” feel in powder.
Freeride / All‑Mountain Versatility It bridges freeride and playful terrain well: you get float, you get decent carve / grip, but also enough flex and forgiveness to ride varied terrain (trees, side hits, mixed snow) without it being overly stiff or brutal.
Edge Hold and Carving Thanks to the sidecut design (Power Grip) and the camber sections, it holds well on edge, especially in mixed or harder snow. Not as razor‑sharp as a full camber stiff freeride board, but very competent.
Smooth Ride / Vibration Damping The RDS‑2 damping, elastomeric stabilizers, and build materials help mellow out chatter/crud.
