What Size is Best for You?

Goalie leg pad sizing often varies by brand, but there is one commonly used formula you can use to find your ballpark size. Take your hockey skate size, ankle to knee measurement (inches), and knee to mid-thigh measurement (inches), then add them up and you should have a good idea of where to start looking. Remember to consult the seller before purchasing in order to get a better idea of the fit, sizing, etc.

Example measurement Skate size: 9 Ankle to knee: 17” Knee to thigh: 7” Your approximate pad size is 33”+1

What Comes In A Full Set?

Each piece of equipment is tailored to the goalie’s style, whether they prefer more mobility or protection.

Glove
: Worn on the hand, this glove catches the puck. It’s typically larger with a deep pocket to trap the puck, and the thumb is often reinforced to prevent injury.

Blocker: Worn on the hand that holds the stick, this is a padded piece of equipment designed to block pucks and deflect them away from the goalie’s body.

Leg Pads: Worn on the legs to protect the knees, thighs, and shins. They are larger and heavier than regular player pads and are designed to block pucks while allowing extra movement. Typically include features like thigh protectors, knee wings, and a stiff or soft construction depending on the goalie’s style of play.

Buying Used Checklist: Hockey Goalie Full Sets

Buying used gear is a sustainable way to score high-quality items at a fraction of the cost. Not only can you find great deals, but you might also stumble upon rare or discontinued gear that’s no longer available in stores. When buying a used hockey goalie full set, here's what to look for:

✔️ Check for wear around the knees and ankles; ensure foam hasn’t compressed and straps are intact.
✔️ Look for rips or wear on high-stress areas (palms, fingers, thumb) and check for cracks or loose materials.
✔️ Ensure padding isn’t too soft or damaged; check for cracked inserts and loose stitching.
✔️ Inspect for cuts, scratches, or abrasions that don’t affect protection.
✔️ Ensure straps, buckles, and Velcro are intact and functional.
✔️ Verify that plastic reinforcements and knee/thigh protection are intact.
✔️ Check inside gloves and blockers for foam degradation.
✔️ Ensure the gear is clean and free of mold or strong odors that can’t be removed.
