The Stallion 1K is the top midfielder head for sure. It's based on the original Stallion design that pro player Kyle Harrison used and designed for that two-way midfielder. The 1K has an improved stiffness, shape retention, and an updated scoop. PLL rookie, Nick Nakeie Montgomery, who ranked 28th in Duke history in career points, also uses this head. I like this head because it can be used both on the offensive side of midfield and the defensive side. It weighs in at about 4.7 oz, making it lighter than the current ECD DNA 2.0, StringKing Mark 2V, and Mark 2T.

This head would be the go-to for players like Connor DeSimone.

The STX Duel 3 is designed for the face-off and stay-on midfielder. This head is made with STX’s Reflex material to help hold the shape a lot longer, so you can continue to use it for offense or defense after the face-off. The top of the head has a slimmed-down scoop that’s designed for face-offs and to make ground balls easier. It has a shorter throat to make the top hand position closer to the ball for more control. It has 4 screw holes on the throat to ensure the head doesn’t rattle.

The STX Hammer is widely regarded as one of the best defensive heads available. The head features new technologies like the speed scoop, C-Channel, and the strike plate on the sidewall. The speed scoop combined with the wide top of the head helps create a greater variety of approach angles for ground balls; that, plus it facilitates a smoother release to increase speed and accuracy. The C-Channel technology helps add strength and stability while creating a tighter channel for the ball to be funneled into while also improving stiffness for heavy checks. The STX Shield is one of the highest regarded goalie heads on the market because of the stiff design and lightweight feel. The head uses C-Channel technology to help improve strength in the areas that experience the most impact; this also increases stiffness and stability to enable consistent outlet passes. The head also has a ergonomic throat that helps improve wrist mobility for goalies that play with their upper palm right at the bottom of the head. The top rail also helps create a consistent and tight channel to increase accuracy on clears and ground balls.

It’s true that there are many fewer options available to goalies compared to field players when it comes to lacrosse heads. STX aims to cater to goalies by being one of the leading manufacturers of goalie-specific heads. The Shield is a big advancement over the original Eclipse, and there are many features that set it apart. To start, the new throat design was developed into a newer shape that allows goalies to slide their top hand up higher on their shaft. This, ultimately, helps lead to fewer rebounds. Another improvement? The rigidity of the head. Stiffness is key for blocking as many shots as possible, and from all different angles. The STX shield is one of the stiffest goalie heads on the market.
