What is An Extension?

A +1, +2, or +3 means that the pants have an extended length of 1”, 2", or 3" respectively. If you are a taller player but have a smaller waist size, keep an eye out for the size you need in extended lengths.

What Size Hockey Pant Should I Get?

When shopping for hockey pants, you should consider both your height and waist size, measured just above the hips. Note that different brands have slight variations in sizing, so consult both sellers and brand websites for more information before making a purchase.

Goalie Pants vs. Player Pants

Goalie pants are designed to protect a goaltender from the impact of pucks, sticks, and collisions. They're different from regular player pants in a few key ways:

  1. Extra Padding: Goalie pants have more and thicker padding than regular hockey pants. This includes protection in the hips, thighs, knees, and tailbone. Some also feature extra padding around the lower back and sides to protect from body checks and falls.

  2. Flexibility & Mobility: While heavily padded, goalie pants are also designed to allow full range of motion. Goaltenders need to move quickly, get into the butterfly position, and stretch across the crease, so the pants are often more flexible and lighter than traditional player pants.

  3. Waist and Closure Design: Goalie pants typically have a higher waistline and a more adjustable, secure fit to help prevent them from riding down or shifting during play. The pants also usually have a belt or tie system that keeps them in place while allowing flexibility.

  4. Lower Back Protection: Many goalie pants have built-in lower back protection. This is crucial because goalies often experience a lot of falls, twists, and contact to the back.

  5. Fit Around the Thighs and Knees: They tend to be bulkier around the thigh area to prevent pucks from hitting sensitive spots. The knee pads are often much more reinforced, and some pants even have special features for enhanced knee protection (like extended padding that covers the entire knee region).

  6. Weight Distribution: Goalie pants are made to balance protection and mobility, so while they might be heavier than regular player pants, they’re designed to keep a goalie’s center of gravity lower and help with stability during plays.

Combining these features helps goalies take massive shots, dive into positions, and still be as quick and agile as they need to be while staying safe.
