Football helmets are designed with specific materials and features to provide maximum protection, comfort, and performance.

Outer Shell

  • Polycarbonate or ABS Plastic. Most football helmets have a shell made from durable plastic, often polycarbonate or ABS. These materials are lightweight yet strong, designed to absorb and distribute the force of impacts to reduce injury risk.

Inner Padding:

  • Expanded Polyurethane (EPS): Inside the helmet, the padding is typically made from EPS foam, which helps absorb shock and impact forces. The foam is lightweight and compresses on impact to reduce the force transferred to the head.
  • Memory Foam: Some helmets use memory foam for better comfort and a customized fit, molding to the shape of the player's head over time.

Face Mask: Steel or Titanium. The face mask is typically made of steel or titanium, with titanium masks being lighter but more expensive. It protects the face while allowing visibility and airflow.

Padding and Linings: Air or Gel Pads. Some helmets have additional air or gel pads to enhance comfort and impact resistance. These pads offer added protection against smaller impacts or repeated hits.

Chin Strap: Nylon or Leather. Chin straps are often made from nylon or leather and are adjustable to help secure the helmet in place during play. They’re important for keeping the helmet from shifting during hits.

Start by measuring your head. Once you know the circumference of your head, you can refer to a sizing chart to match your helmet brand to the right size. Most football helmets weigh 6 pounds or less, with five pounds being the standard average. For younger players, seek out a lighter helmet, with 6 pounds being the top end for a young athlete.

Buying used gear is a sustainable way to score high-quality items at a fraction of the cost. Not only can you find great deals, but you might also stumble upon rare or discontinued gear that’s no longer available in stores. When buying a used football helmet, here's what to look for:

✔️ There are no cracks in the outer shell.
✔️ All padding is intact with no rips or tears.
✔️ The face mask is attached to the helmet.
✔️ The helmet has a place to attach a chin strap.
