players—and that’s just what they did with the Threat. The newest 2022 Threat comes
in an awesome Stars and Stripes themed colorway that we all
love, and delivers on its promise of enabling smaller hitters to swing with extra speed
through the strike zone. The 2022 Threat has evolved from when the series started in
2018 by adding even more width to an already expansive barrel—although I’ve heard
young hitters still love the 2019 Threat, as well (if only because of its neon green
colorway). If you seek a one piece composite bat that isn’t going to break the bank and
will benefit those who haven’t yet grown into their natural power, the Rawlings Threat

The longest lasting metal bat series on the market is still at its peak. Rawlings legendary Velo series returned in 2022, with a Velo ACP release that I’ve heard hitters say offers unparalleled balance at the plate. Over time, the Rawlings Velo series has evolved by incorporating the ACP (Accelerated Carbon Performance) line that adds extra carbon in the barrel, which we’ve heard does a lot to increase pop. While Velo’s aren’t the best looking bats you’re going to find, they make up for the plainness with top-notch performance. The Quatro Pro launched in 2019. Even today, it's one of the hottest bats out there. If you can find one, the Quatro Pro is a great performer; it is lightweight, easy to swing, and has a ton of pop. Probably one of the top five BBCOR bats of all time. 

The first two years had breakage issues. Since then, Rawlings has made some adjustments to the barrel, thickened the sidewalls and made the bat more durable, but in doing so, they lessened the performance. The later models are not as popular as the early ones.

The 2022 Prodigy bat is a favorite within USA baseball leagues because of its extremely lightweight feel and red/orange color combination. The one- piece alloy bat was first released in 2017, and Rawlings has remained committed to providing an affordable yet effective Prodigy bat model every year since. Besides looks, I’ve noticed that not much has changed between the earliest Prodigy bat and the most recent release—but that’s because youth hitters clearly have no complaints about this model. The Rawlings Prodigy bat series is proof that, sometimes, keeping it simple is best for success.

The Rawlings 5150 series is the ultimate workman’s bat. The most recent 2023 Rawlings 5150 furthered the end loaded, heavier feel and extra stiffness that we loved its predecessors for, while adding a brand new bat grip that hitters I’ve spoken to say provides unmatched comfort at the plate. Although some of these hitters also miss the neon green 5150 releases from 2016 and 2017, the model’s evolution can be clearly traced through this bat’s commitment to one piece, alloy bats that care about performance over cosmetics. The Rawlings 5150 is a blue-collar, power hitter’s bat that I’d recommend for anyone who’s looking to pad their home run stats.

Rawlings’ patented hinge system provides a focused flex, which helps hitters generate incredible pop. A lightweight endcap reduces swing weight and helps generate great swing speed, while vibration dampening technology reduces hand sting to prevent any pain when you make contact with a pitch. For elite level hitters, be sure to check out the Quatro College/High School Bat (-3), or the 2018 Quatro USA Baseball Bat (-10).


### Expert Notes

The Rawlings Quatro features a decent sized barrel and has little to no feedback on the hands during mishits. It’s one of the best BBCOR bat options out there, in our opinion. The exit speed is phenomenal, and the only drawback we’ve noticed is that it’s not very durable. 

The only major difference between the 2018 Quatro and the 2017 version is the swing weight. Although the swing weight change is not very dramatic (aka they did not go all the way from an end load to a balanced) it is enough to make a noticeable difference. The swing weight change was created by the redevelopment of the end cap and the extended inner sleeve. More bulk was removed from those elements, which caused the swing weight to drop significantly. The principle is simple enough: the more weight that is taken from the end of a bat, the less strength is required to spin it around by the knob. This insight relies on the basic principles of Mass Moment of Inertia (or MOI).

* My son loves the 30", 5oz Easton Fire bat. It's hot straight out of the wrapper and feels lighter than his old one. The colors are bold but the grip is great. It has a normal composite bat sound and a well-balanced swing with a lot of pop. Highly recommended.
* My son switched to Easton Hype Fire bat after being a fan of Marucci for years. He loves the huge sweet spot, lighter weight and tons of pop. According to him, it's the perfect bat for USSSA.
* I love to see the confidence this bat gives my son. He's a very strong hitter, but with this bat, I see him being more patient, trusting his swing more, and hitting harder balls.

* My son used this bat for about 2-3 months before small cracks in the bat started to form. He still used it because his old bat (30-inch -8 Demarini Zoa) was broken. It is an amazing bat but it probably won't last a full season in 13U baseball because of the speed.
* My son's new bat, a 30" (-8), has a small 1/2" crack after just two sessions of coach pitch BP with around 50 hits. It's brittle and we've never used it on a tee or machine. I'm surprised at how quickly it broke.
* I wish they were made stronger. It has great pop, great swing but the durability is lacking. Our original purchase cracked in a month and our replacement cracked in 2 months.

The Hype Fire is the hottest, lightest swinging bat right now. The swing rate is very fast. It's a balanced, two piece composite bat. The first ones that came out had some breakage issues but they are now on that bat's second gen. We've not seen any of the new ones breaking. And to top it all off, it has the coolest paint job. The flames are yellow, orange, and red. The players love that.

* Great feel and pop. Although I usually change grips, the stock grip on this bat is solid. The durability is very impressive as well, as the bat has already outlasted most others.
* No failures on Meta bats except cosmetic chips. They perform better than new. High school varsity team used 32-3 for 2 years without issues. Change grip tape yearly and keep hitting!

* A kid in a slump hit his first-ever home run with this bat. It arrived just in time for a playoff game and worked great for my average-sized 11-year-old son - not too heavy.
* After breaking in this bat properly, it really performs well! My son uses it for our USSSA 8U Travel team and you can easily tell when it's hit on the sweet spot. The bat is also forgiving on mis-hits, often resulting in faster grounders than usual (for this age group) and very high pop.
* This bat has more pop than most USA bats, similar to BBCOR/USSA. We broke it in with tee hits, and my son hit missiles and balls over the fence on the first day. Expensive, but worth it for avid players.

* Decent pop and has good barrel control. It seems lighter due to the way it;s balanced. If you’re thinking of moving up in size, do it with this bat.
* I got my son the CAT X BBCOR 33" bat. He chose it over his Voodoo One for his high school varsity games. The CAT X seems well-built, and other players using it have had no issues. In contrast, two of his teammates' Voodoo One bats have already broken this season.

* The BBCOR Cat X is by far the worst Marucci we've ever bought. It has NO Pop and sounds like he's hitting rocks with the bat. The ball barely leaves the infield when he hits it. 
* Broken in by underhand toss of 160 pitches. Handle broke in a week. Wearing gloves saved the my son's hands.
* Unfortunately my son has been using this bat for only a few weeks and there is already something rattling in the handle.

CATX came out in 2023. The first gen is a white ribbon silver bat. For the second run, Marucci came out with a version called the CATX Vanta. It's a blacked-out, limited-edition. Both gens are an alloy one-piece bat, both very strong performers. They took the alloy and strength from the CAT9 and applied the balance and feel from the CAT8 to develop the CATX.

The CAT X Composite is very, very easy to swing. Not quite as popular as the CF in terms of performance. There are newer Marucci bats out there that are stronger, hotter-performing bats. But it's still a top top-tier bat. It's right up there with the CAT9 composite, but it doesn't get the notoriety because you've got some newer bats on the market with cooler paint jobs.

Endurance is the name of the game when it comes to Easton’s Mako bat series. Despite being discontinued in 2017, Easton Mako bats continue to sell very well in the modern market. This two-piece composite bat offers an additional jolt of pop at the plate, and its anti-vibration technology makes getting jammed a little less painful—physically, at least. The 2016 Easton Mako, in particular, has ascended into baseball bat folklore because of its neon green colorway and insane ability to demolish baseballs (although some hitters prefer the orange 2015 model, too). They took the same design from the CAT8 and strengthened the CAT9 with a stronger alloy to avoid any denting issues. It's a very good, durable bat. The CAT9 will be a bit heavier than the CAT8; it's a better bat for stronger kids. The first generation of the CAT9 came out with a gray, black, and red paint job. The second generation they called the Past Time, which was red, white, and blue. It's the same bat, but a different paint job. The second bat was more popular simply because of how it looked. Everyone likes the American Flag with its Stars and Stripes.

* This bat is heavy and can be hard to locate the barrel. I recommended for very strong players. If you swing a drop 5 alloy, try a drop 8 Zoa.

You have a tiny market share that uses it; the popularity isn't as strong as the two piece simply because The Goods One Piece seems to rattle. If you don't hit it in the barrel's sweet spot, you can get a little feedback in the hands, a slight vibration. The Goods two-piece has a damper built in, so if you didn't hit it just right, it absorbed some of that vibration, whereas the one-piece doesn't have that technology. \

The CAT9 Composite comes in two designs across two generations. The first, released in 2021, is gray, black, and red. And then it came out in red, white, blue, and gray. The first model was a more powerful, higher-performing bat. It has more exit velocity and is a hotter bat than the 2nd gen. Very durable, with very little breakage. Marucci's, across the board, have been good bats in terms of quality; they seem to last. Whether you're a power hitter or a small kid, the CAT9 Composite does very well.

* I am pleased to say that my son has experienced an increased exit speed and longer distances. He has noticed that the bat has an expanded sweet spot, resulting in more comfortable hits with less sting.
* My son had a few mishits but the ball still came off decently, and he mentioned that there was no vibration. I would recommend this bat, especially for younger kids who are improving their skills but still want success.
* A go-to choice when under pressure. It has a large sweet spot, providing a ton of power. The bat is also easy to swing and consistently achieves a higher exit velocity off the tee compared to a Cat9 alloy and 23' meta.

* I purchased the -8 version, which has a small sweet spot. The knob is great, but the grip is not as effective. 
* If you are still 11, I suggest you get the drop ten because it has a bigger sweet spot and more pop due to its smaller aluminum content. Overall, it's a nice medium-swinging -8! 
* I was unaware that this bat was the Junior version and only recommended for Coach Pitch.

The CAT8 is an older model from 2019 and a good BBCOR and USSSA bat. Very good performing bat with a sound that players love. Lightweight and easy to swing. It's probably one of the best sellers, and since the CAT8 is still available, it's perhaps one of the better bang for the buck. Prices dropped for this older model. So, it is a good match for an entry-level player on a tight budget.
