Callaway XR Golf Iron Sets

The Callaway XR Golf Iron Set is engineered for golfers who demand top-tier performance and forgiveness. Featuring Callaway's innovative 360 Face Cup Technology, these irons employ a flexible rim around the face to deliver explosive ball speeds and exceptional distance, even on off-center hits. The multi-piece construction combines a soft heat-treated body with a tempered steel face, ensuring an optimal blend of feel and durability. Internal Standing Wave technology precisely positions the center of gravity, promoting higher launch angles and more controlled ball flights. With a wider sole and advanced perimeter weighting, the XR irons significantly enhance stability and forgiveness.

Perfect irons for:
Players of all skill levels who see a combination of power, precision, and playability.

Key features include:

Face Cup TechnologyCreates a larger sweet spot and helps increase ball speeds across the face of the iron, even on mishits.
Wider SolesHelps to improve clubhead stability at impact, which can lead to more consistent ball striking and improved accuracy.
Easy to LaunchHelp golfers to get the ball airborne more easily, which can result in longer distances and more carry.
Game-Improvement ShapeA larger head size and a wider sole than traditional irons.

Top Competitors

TaylorMade M4 Irons are designed for golfers who want a good balance of forgiveness and distance. They feature a cavity back design and a forged face for a soft feel. Titleist T300 Irons are designed for mid-handicappers who want a good balance of forgiveness, distance, and control. They have a thinner face, particularly towards the heel in the long and mid irons. This helps to maintain ball speed and launch performance even on off-center hits.

Progression of the XR irons

The Callaway XR Iron Set was released in 2015 and was positioned as a Super Game Improvement iron for high handicappers seeking maximum forgiveness and distance.

It replaces the X Hot and the X2 Hot irons by adding the following upgrades:

  • Addition of Cup 360 Technology, which acts like a spring, particularly on shots that impact low on the face.
  • The center of gravity position has been lowered, thanks to weighting in the head.
  • The head is constructed using a new dual heat treatment to ensure more precise production.
  • More forgiveness.
👍 Pros
Xr's are very good. The shafts are equally as important, as long as you don't go drastically different in the shaft weight or flex from your previous set, you're going to be ok.
These are game-improvement clubs so they are easy to strike and way more forgiving than other clubs I’ve had.
The XRs are great if you're starting out and if you get the right flex they will be a great club.
👎 Cons
The CG design puts an emphasis on repeatable flights. Not going to be the most workable irons.
The sound has changed and has become sharper overall losing some of the plushness I like.
When you get into long irons like the 3-4 there is more skill required in hitting them into greens because they are harder for most amateurs to launch.
The XR irons excel in distance, which is their standout feature. The Face Cup tech delivers on its promise of increased ball speeds, which can result in distance gains. They have a modern, somewhat chunky look typical of game-improvement irons. The topline is moderately thick, and there's some offset, which may not appeal to lower-handicap players but inspires confidence in some. These are an older model which means you can often find them at a really affordable price.
