Callaway XR Golf Fairway Woods
Callaway XR fairway woods are designed for distance and forgiveness, featuring a larger sweet spot and Hyper Speed Face Cup technology for increased ball speed on off-center hits. With a shallower face design, these clubs promote a higher launch angle, making it easier to get the ball airborne for better performance.
Key features include:
Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup | Renders the face 36% thinner for increased ball speed and creates a larger sweet spot. |
20% Lower CG | Lowers the center of gravity for 200 rpm less spin than previous clubs. |
Redesigned Head Shape | Flatter leading edges, a higher toe, and a shallower face height optimizes this club for players shooting from the fairway. |
Project X LZ Shaft | This new shaft design produces maximum shaft load during the downswing for a better energy transfer to the ball. |
Top Competitors
Launched in 2015, the Callaway XR fairway woods faced competition from two rivals. TaylorMade AeroBurner offered similar forgiveness and high launch potential, with some models boasting more adjustability. Titleist 917 F2 countered with a large sweet spot for forgiveness, the signature Titleist feel, and potentially lower spin for more control on longer shots. Ultimately, the choice among these fairway woods depended on individual golfer preferences for adjustability, desired launch trajectory, and feel.
Progression of the XR fairway woods
The Callaway XR fairway woods were preceded by the Callaway X Hot fairway woods.
Here's a breakdown of the key upgrades introduced in the XR fairway woods:
- The XR fairway wood features a shallower face design than the X Hot models. This makes it easier for golfers to launch the ball off the fairway, especially those who struggle with getting enough height on their fairway wood shots.
- Incorporates Callaway's updated Forged Hyper Speed Face Cup. This aims to generate more ball speed across the face of the club, even on off-center hits, compared to the X Hot series.
- Features an "internal standing wave" that moves the center of gravity lower and closer to the face. This results in less spin, a higher launch, and for most players, more distance.

This is a terrific club. Its sleek design is inspiring. The project x stiff shaft is perfect. |
My game has greatly improved since using this club. It’s very forgiving and I love the distance I get. |
This XR fairway wood is a step up from both the X Hot and the V Series for me. I can hood it a little and hit a low draw or square the face and hit it higher and straight. |
👎 Cons |
---|
In general, I find the Project X shafts to be over-rated. |
There are no adjustment options whatsoever, the technology is outdated. |
This is a nice club. Wish the face was just a little larger. |
There's less tech in the XR than in other models. It's a pretty affordable club that is high-launch. For golfers who have quick tempo, there are a couple different options you can buy in terms of loft. There's one that that's 14 degrees. If you struggle to hit your driver, having a three wood that's 14 degrees will help you get a little bit more distance. Three woods are typically a lot easier to hit than drivers, so an option like this will still get you the distance off the tee that you're looking for if you struggle to hit your driver, and it's easier.
