Top Competitors

The Callaway Rogue Sub Zero Driver offers a similar blend of distance and forgiveness as the M4. It boasts a large titanium clubface designed for high ball speeds and a forgiving overall design. A key differentiator is an adjustable hosel that allows golfers to fine-tune loft (±2 degrees) for launch angle optimization. This adjustability, combined with weight placement for lower spin, could be appealing to golfers who want more control over ball flight. The Ping G410 Plus Driver prioritzes more forgiveness and customization options compared to the M4. It features a large face and internal weighting technology for distance potential. The key differentiating factor is a movable weight system, which offers a simple way to customize the driver for a desired ball flight.

Progression of the M4 driver:

The TaylorMade M4 Driver (released in 2018) belongs to a lineage of TaylorMade drivers focused on distance and forgiveness for a broader range of golfers. The M4 was released in relation to the M3 (2018) and is a replacement of the TaylorMade M2 (2017).

Here are the specific upgrades made to the M4:

  • Increased curvature of the face in the low heel and high toe areas improving gear effect.
  • A new wider Hammerhead slot in the sole (22mm longer at 100mm than on the M2) and is reinforced with two bars along its length.
  • A thinner central section that saves 8 grams of weight.
  • The non-moveable weight in the back of the sole has been increased from 22g to 41g thanks to face weight savings and the re-designed Geocoustic sole.
  • There is a draw version of the M4 driver called the D-Type that has the weight positioned more towards the heel.
  • The leading edge of the M4 is silver instead of white.
👍 Pros
I really like the lightness of this club and that converts to speed and distance.
Great MOI but also super high center of gravity. This driver really bombs off the tee.
The M4 has great spin and is super forgiving. The twist face works and it has good length.
👎 Cons
This driver is an automatic fore machine. I can't figure it out.
Twist face was a no go for me. Seemed to exaggerate my mild fade.
Played one for a season. It was fast but I had to play an 8* head to get spin down. Good driver. Not great.
The TaylorMade M4 Driver is a solid choice for mid-to-high handicappers who want a forgiving driver that bombs drives. It has a large clubhead that inspires confidence at address, and TaylorMade incorporated their Twist Face technology to help straighten out off-center hits for more playable shots. It might not be the most technologically advanced driver out there these days, but for the value you can find them for, it remains a sweet option for golfers who prioritize distance and forgiveness over cutting-edge adjustability.
