Ping G15 Golf Drivers

Ping's G Series golf clubs have proved extremely popular among mid- and high-handicappers due to their extreme forgiveness and easy playability. And the Ping G15 Driver is no exception. Released in 2009, it was a game-changer for golfers seeking an easy launch off the tee. It features a seven percent larger face than the G10 model. A larger face coupled with the External Sole Weight Pad means it's more forgiving and lower-spinning, so even better players can take advantage. It has an innovative ultra-thin crown and feels good almost anywhere you hit it, which is a plus for the average golfer who needs to play more to strike the ball perfectly every time.

Perfect driver for:
Golfers who slice or struggle to get the ball airborne.

Key features include:

Ultra-Thin CrownThis redistributes the weight saved from the crown to a sole weight, optimizing the centre of gravity for a higher launch trajectory and reduced spin.
Larger ClubfaceCompared to previous Ping drivers, the G15 offers a 7% bigger clubface. This increases ball speed and provides consistency across the face.
External Sole WeightThe weight saved from the thin crown is repositioned as an external weight on the sole of the driver.
Playability FocusThe G15 remains true to the Ping G series' focus on playability. It’s meant to be easier to launch the ball and achieve straighter shots.

Also released around 2009, the Callaway FT-i features a large titanium clubface designed for high ball speeds. Additionally, it incorporates Callaway's Hyper Speed Face Technology, which aims to further optimize ball speed across the face for longer distances. This focus on maximizing distance appeals to golfers seeking more power off the tee, even if they are not necessarily high handicap players. The TaylorMade R11 focuses on forgiveness for mid-to-high handicappers. Similar to the G15, it boasts a large clubface for a bigger sweet spot. The key differentiating factor is its adjustability. The TaylorMade R11 features a moveable weight system that allows golfers to fine-tune their launch conditions and potentially influence shot shape (draw or fade bias).

Progression of the G15 driver:

The G15 driver (released in 2009) was considered a worthy successor to the G10, boasting advancements in forgiveness and performance.

  • Larger Head Face: The G15 features a seven percent larger face than the G10 model and this, coupled with the External Sole Weight Pad, means it’s more forgiving and also lower-spinning.
  • Alignment Aid: The G15 incorporated a slightly modernized alignment system compared to the G10. This improves address confidence for golfers aiming to square the clubface at impact.
  • External Weight Pad: Helps to move the centre of gravity lower and further away from the face for a powerful launch.
👍 Pros
I still play the G15, put a custom Graffaloy nanofuse Epic shaft on it. The look and feel is great and I still bomb it off the tee
The G15 works great as long as it’s in good condition. I buy older drivers all the time, the faces are just as hot as new drivers but lack in adjustability.
This is a major improvement from the G10, I love the look.
👎 Cons
The face of the driver cracked after 2 months, I don’t even swing fast.
Slightly less forgiving for today's standards and can't be adjusted to fit you.
If you want an adjustable driver, the G15 is not for you.

The Ping G15 driver is a classic for a reason. While definitely not the newest driver on the market, it's a great choice for those who prioritize control and a clean feel over raw distance. The G15 has a smaller, 440cc clubhead compared to today's drivers, but that translates to more precise shot shaping and better workability for skilled golfers. The forged titanium face has a crisp feel at impact, and provides more feedback than some modern drivers.
