What Is a Sliding Mitt & Why Use One?
A sliding mitt is a padded glove worn by baseball and softball players—usually on their lead hand when running the bases—to protect fingers, hands, and wrists during slides.
Sliding mitts help prevent common injuries like:
- Jammed fingers when your hand catches the base or turf
- Broken or sprained wrists from awkward landings
- Turf burns and abrasions from hard slides
Most mitts also feature rigid padding or flexible inserts along the top of the hand and sides, which help disperse impact and reduce hyperextension. Some models even offer thumb guards for added safety.
Sliding mitts help you stay aggressive. Because of the added protection, sliding mitts give players more confidence to go all-out. Whether you’re stealing a base, diving back on a pickoff move, or stretching a single into a double, the mitt gives peace of mind that your hand is shielded from impact.
