Vintage Leader 2 wood Classic persimmon fairway wood with original grip. Persimmon is a hard, heavy and strong North American hardwood belonging in the ebony family. It was desired by golfers to overcome some shortcomings of ubiquitous laminated maple woods. Not the least of these were shock and wear resistance in addition to being solid wood versus laminated layers. Note that there is no insert, an indication of it being an old club. I am not sure about Leader, but suspect it is made by a custom clubmaker of the time and not a big manufacturer. Similar period clubs from old catalogs indicate this is maybe around 1930’s vintage. The grip is chewed up a bit, but is original. Any faults can be easily rectified by any competent wood or leather worker. These should be no detraction from this club in my opinion. The length is seen on the ruler. The shaft is sheathed as was the practice at the time. Steel shafts were not fully accepted by golfing elites so they were often disguised by sheathing so it would not be so evident. It also has no label so I cannot discern the flex. But it seems to be regular to stiff. I recommend just using this for display due to its age. Note that the soles are curved from toe to heel, but flat from face to back. They were designed to adapt to any lie, to hit the ball then bounce off the turf after impact. The face forward feature is explained in Tommy Armour’s lesson. This was the belief of the time: to loft the ball. For display, one can expect some comments on thIs golfing implement due to its uniqueness. You will probably not find another like it.
